General Assembly

Today, in the general assembly, the delegates were presenting their opening speeches about the nuclear energy and overpopulation. The delegation of the United Kingdom submitted a resolution that the United States of America didn’t approve of. The United States of America and the Republic of China didn’t agree with the United Kingdom and said that each family should have the right to give birth to a certain number of children only. The United Kingdom said that if a woman has a good career, she won’t be interested in having children. Australia disagreed on what the United Kingdom stated, the delegate said that a woman could get a nanny to take care of her children while she’s at work, but at the end, the housewife is better than any woman who has a career at raising a child. Having too many children does not affect the country as long as the resources are not wasted or overused. It also depends on whether the people are rich or poor. Poor people use less than 2% of the energy, while the rich use over 50%, middle class people use the other 48%.   Mostafa Kandeel, Youssef Ramadan and Farida...

Is it World War III?

The delegates of the countries were arguing, because of the conflict of the South China Sea.   In this conflict, a lot of countries were affected including the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. These countries were fighting for their rights in South China Sea, so the United Nations decided to try and solve this problem because it will cause a massive destruction to the marine life and it could result to a third World War. The People’s Republic of China  has the majority of the sea, they are building artificial islands to claim that it is their territory, but the other countries disagree. Thus, they are trying to solve it. The only solution to this problem is that they create a code of conduct, and any country will face a punishment if it goes against it.                                                                                                                                        – Aly shoukry, Ahmed Zikry and Salma el...

The next step towards security

This time, in the security council committee, every country began their opening speech with the presentation of the topics resolutions. Almost every country wanted to resolve the problem using a peaceful method. For example, Egypt said : The South China Sea problem can only be resolved through peaceful discussions . Ukraine wanted to divide the South China Sea equally for the surrounding countries. And also they discussed the clauses and the solutions. They were discussing the resolution of the United States of America, the most important clauses in this resolution were: Clause 1: Wishes the cooperation between the People’s Republic of China, and all members in the council to find peaceful and logical solutions regarding the conflict in the South China Sea. Clause 2: Demands a temporary supervision made by the UN  in that area until further notice Clause 9: Notes that the United States of America shall continue conducting military operation in cooperation with allies in order to enhance maritime security and law forces as effectively to deal with any sort of violation in the disputed area. Debate: Clause 1: “It’s logical and a good clause, this clause is so important” said the United Kingdom.              “I Vote for this clause as it will help the problem of the South China Sea” said the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.             “This clause is important to reach a solution for the problem of the South China Sea” said the Republic of France.            Malaysia added an amendment to the clause number 1, the other countries started voting on the amendment, so at last the amendment passed. Then they started voting...

Human Rights

The delegates of the Human Rights Committee were talking about some issues. Every country discussed their point of view. For example, the United States Of America talked about the 9/11 attack. In the committee, the delegates talked about what happened in transportation. They said that when an Arab travels through any airport, he gets extra inspection so that’s not fair. The Republic of Japan objected and explained that this is just for security reasons and not to treat Arabs in a bad way; that’s not a human right and the traveller might be an innocent person and they also shouldn’t  judge the person by their appearance. There is something that I want to say when I went to an international camp, I met people from 12 different countries and there was a game called stereotype. Everyone wrote on a piece of paper the name of their country and that paper was passed to every delegate. They had to write a stereotypical fact and all sorts of stereotypes were stated such as “Arabs are terrorists”, which is not true. Youssef Mohamed, Ahmed Abbas and Amr...

A strong debate and stronger women!

In this committee they were debating about the delegate’s speech which was about child marriage and gender equality. Each delegate approached the podium and talked about the negative and the positive things that happened in their countries. They discussed the topic and stated if they’re with gender equality and child marriage or against It, they also discussed the sub-clauses of the resolution. The debate was so strong between the countries. For example: -The delegation of Egypt is against child marriage and for gender equality. -The delegation of Iraq is with child marriage and against gender equality At the end of the committee there was a very strong debate and one of the delegates proposed to stop it. Almost all the delegates agreed, this was how the committee ended. -Carla Rafla, Laila Atwan, Safa Ahmed and Sumaya...

Before it all begins..

As the conference begins, the committees were in lobbying and merging sessions. Every group was representing its clauses and finding solutions so that each one could write the perfect resolution for the topics. Each country has its own point of view on the problem; however, there are allies that sit together and discuss their ideas, turn them into clauses, and create a resolution that pleases all countries that are co-submitting. Committees were lobbying and merging about their council’s two topics. Security council, French and English committees were both finding solutions to “the conflict of the South China Sea and the problem of Afghanistan.” As for the council of Human Rights, French and English, they were both discussing “The role of security infrastructure in countering terrorism and protecting human rights and measures to reinforce the rights of the workers during infrastructure constructions.” The delegates in the General Assembly were finding solutions to the following topics. The sustainable management of nuclear energy and the increase of the global population and its impact on the resources. Nevertheless, we also witnessed the lobbying and merging of the General Assembly’s plenary session, which includes all the committees in the OISMUN conference except for the ICJ. This year’s topic is “Abolishment of the death penalty”. As for ECOSOC, this year, the council is experiencing new changes. The council is now divided into two sub-commissions, the first being Status of Women and the second Science and Technology. Sub-commission 1: Status of women was working on resolutions on the topic of Child marriage, and Sub-commission 2: Science and Technology was trying to find solutions to the modernization...

Is Hussein Habre guilty or not?

In the International Court of Justice, the judges and advocates were discussing the case of Hussein Habre, the former president of the republic of Chad, who ruled from 1982 until 1990. During his 8 years rule, he committed crimes against humanity, assaulted women, imprisoned citizens, etc. The citizens then overthrew him in 1990, Belgium decided to extradite him from Chad to Belgium on behalf of the Chadian citizens and Belgian citizens with Chadian origins;  Habre made a political asylum to Senegal and Senegal accepted it.      During Belgium’s advocates’ opening speech, they stated that “Chad lived in chaos and in a place where they were afraid to give their opinion, there was gender based violence and sexual harassments; more than 3,000 people were victims of rape, violence, hunger, poverty and all kinds of torture, as stated in article 4 H and article 295 paragraph 1. And if these  things did not happen, Chad would have not been what it is now”.  Senegal replied  “you have no proof or evidence that Habre actually committed these crimes. These crimes were not illegal during his period of ruling, and they were outside Senegalese territories.”     Senegal also said that this law was not illegal during Habre’s ruling period (ex: post  facto) so the former president should not be considered guilty. Moreover, the Belgian advocates replied that even though theses crimes were not illegal, Senegal itself ratified the convention against torture in 1984 and the country didn’t take this into consideration and that itself is illegal.       As the advocates left, the judges talked about how the Senegalese advocates said in their opening speech that Hussein Habre...

Head to Head

The topic discussed in the Big GA was “Sustainable Development in the Middle East and Northern Africa”, which started with a lobbying and merging session on Monday, November 9th 2015. The latter went as following: they all discussed their countries’ foreign policies as well as their ideologies and such, to help them decide who to co-submit with. That being said, the main submitters were USA and China, each writing a resolution of their own. The group supporting China, divided themselves into three groups to assure organisation; one group was discussing the economical aspects for the resolution, the second one was responsible for environmental issues, and the third group made a point of discussing the social aspects to take into consideration when writing a resolution. The group representing the United States of America came up with a few solutions to form the necessary clauses; one of them being increasing trades between the MENA -Middle East Northern Africa- countries to take part in the economical development, seeing as some countries have products to export that can definitely help other countries. Following the before-stated lobbying and merging session, the actual Big GA took place the following day, with the main submitters having had submitted their resolutions earlier. The first resolution submitted was that of the United States of America, which hinted on financial aid from more developed countries to those who are less developed. They also mentioned social equality, which had in thought gender equity to provide a stable and friendly society to live in. Countries like Ukraine spoke in favour for the resolution submitted by USA, while other countries like Iraq...

Fight?

On this day, the MUN Security Council was talking about Yemen and the Huthii rebels and they were talking about how the Huthis are attacking and occupying the Yemeni territory. The Agenda of the council that day was to find adequate solutions to this issue.  The Russian delegation suggested providing humanitarian aid to the Yemeni republic. The representative of the Nigerian republic raised a point of information in regards the number of countries willing to contribute in the humanitarian aid. The resolution passed with a remarkable majority. The United States representative submitted a resolution, urging all countries to collaborate and reach an agreement to help achieve political stability in Yemen. China and the Russian federation vetoed two clauses that suggested continuing the air strikes in Yemen. Another suggestion was to ban the Huthi leader and his son from traveling to be trialed by the International Criminal Court. The majority of the honorable delegates in the council agreed on this clause, and thought that this solution will contribute effectively in resolving the Yemeni situation. The council had a remarkably fruitful debate.   AHMED OMAR with the help of Rodayna...

DON’T START WAR BASED OFF FEAR BUT BASED ON ACTIONS

On the 3rd day of OISMUN, the committee of special conference was arguing on the second topic: The 6th of October 1973 Yom Kippur war, also known as the Arab-Israeli war. They were doing their best to find solutions to the Israeli invasion of Sinai and the Golan Heights. The committee were debating about the resolution that the delegation of United States of America submitted, one of the delegates requested dividing the issue into two parts, and now they have to deal with two different resolutions.  The chair took the place of the Israeli delegate to argue with the one of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The latter offended Israel so they had to apologize. The USSR Union of Soviet Socialist Republics believed that Israel started a war based on fear not on actions. The USSR added that Israel was invading Sinai and the Golan heights, and all that Egypt did was trying to get their land back and avoid war. Religion cannot be an excuse to send Syria and Egypt to the international court of justice. Menna Asran Jannah...
